PLAYER PROFILE Del Happy Birthday for the 17th December 'THE BIG 40' Derek Wilton
Age: Almost the big Four - 0, but not quite! (December 17th if you want to send him a card) Instrument :
Euphonium & Trumpet - Mainly Trumpet nowadays At the age of 12,
Del took an interest in learning to play the horn with St. Agnes (Silver)
Band, along with his brother (David). Fed up with just being the ‘taxi’
service to the weekly rehearsals his father John decided to learn playing the
bass! It was here in this picturesque community that the Wilton’s embarked
on what would turn out to be a lifetime hobby of music making, that takes Del
and his father to where they are today-members of Bryanek Brass
‘Macmillan’ Ensemble. From these humble
beginnings Del formed a lasting friendship with the other members despite
various career moves and working away from ‘home’ in Cornwall. At one
stage Del and Ian were prominent players in the now (sadly) decommissioned
Devon and Cornwall Police Band, a 15-year alliance that involved the pair in
numerous events that will be fondly remembered for the rest of their lives. After many years playing the euphonium/baritone with the Police Band, Del has returned to the ‘mother’ instrument and enjoying a fresh challenge learning to play the trumpet. Now a recycled teenager approaching the big four-0 and happily married to Noelle (Macmillan fundraising manager), Dels’ philosophy on life is generally ‘enjoy
everyday as though it were you last…because one day you will be right!’
turned up at a concert and all the
valves/slides were missing out of the euph, having
forgot to put them all back in the instrument during
an overhaul.
Best Musical Achievement:
few, bass players never achieve, just
exist! Best memories with the Cornwall Youth Band
performances at the National festival For Youth in
1982, Albert hall and festival Hall.
Favourite Piece:
English Heritage, George Lloyd.
Favourite Drink:
A real ale called 'Buddy's Dribble' which I brew |
